LULAC National Educational Service Centers receives Wagner-Peyser grant.

LULAC National Educational Service Centers (LNESC) will be making an announcement Saturday at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country leading to the start of the LULAC National Women’s Conference on Friday that it has been awarded a $490,000 Wagner-Peyser grant by Governor Rick Perry's office. The grants are given annually to various organizations to provide workforce training programs and are administered by the Texas Workforce Commission. This grant will support 5 program sites in Texas: Corpus Christi, Dallas, El Paso, Houston and San Antonio.

he League of Latin American Citizens’ Young Readers program has received a $1 million grant from the Verizon Foundation to expand the program, which is aimed at improving literacy and academic achievement among Hispanic children in grades 1-3.

Historic National Day For Latino Voters In Texas

Ciro Rodriguez Defeats Seven-Term Congressman, Henry Bonilla in District 23 Runoff. The League of United Latin American Citizens hailed the election of Ciro Rodriguez over seven-term incumbent Henry Bonilla in the District 23 special runoff election as proof that the Voting Rights Act is still an effective tool in ensuring that minority communities can elect the candidate of their choice.

LULAC Is Victorious For The Latino Voters

The League of United Latin American Citizens and the State of Texas negotiated a court order today in the special runoff election for Congressional District 23 allowing more time for voters to cast their ballots. The court order signed by federal district judge Xavier Rodriguez extends the early voting period through Saturday, 12-09-2006. The court also extends the early voting locations hours to 8:00 pm for each of the early voting days. The order leaves it to the discretion of each county to extend both the time and the Saturday voting.

The Puerto Rico Status Debate: Why Congress? Why Now?

One hundred years ago, Puerto Rico became a part of the United States in settlement of the Spanish-American War. Nineteen years later, the United States granted U.S. citizenship to the Island's inhabitants. Using its authority under the "territorial" clause of the U.S. Constitution, Congress over time has extended a measure of local self-rule to the American citizens of Puerto Rico. The current structure of local government, commonly known as "Commonwealth" was enacted in 1952.

LULAC Launches Immigrant Human Rights Movement at Border Summit

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Derechos Humanos Coalition/Arizona Border Rights Project are convening a border summit, "From Border to Border: Building a Human Rights Movement," this weekend, December 8-10. The Summit will bring together over 350 participants to address the growing human rights crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border and discuss three inter-related themes: globalization, immigration and the subsequent militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border.
