Washington, DC – The League of United Latin American Citizens, the largest and oldest Hispanic civil rights organization in the country, National President Rosa Rosales released the following statement in reaction to the devastating earthquake in Chile:

“I want to express my deepest condolences and prayers to the families who lost loved ones and for the losses Chile suffered as a result of Saturday's tragic 8.8-magnitude quake that killed more than 700 people and left 500,000 homes damaged. We commend President Bachelet for the Chilean government’s response to the disaster and recognized Chile’s capacity and expertise in responding to earthquakes. The United States stands ready to assist the Chilean government’s rescue and recovery efforts. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Chile today and will be working “in solidarity” with the leaders of Chile."

LULAC commends the Secretary for visiting the country to provide disaster assistance.
