Welcome to Latinos Living Healthy!

As part of its commitment to ensure the civil rights of all Hispanics in all areas of health and human services the League of United Latin American Citizens is spearheading the Latinos Living Healthy Initiative in an effort to reduce obesity and other health disparities among vulnerable populations. Through this initiative, LULAC seeks to enable both children and adults of all races, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds and geographic locations to have access to nutrition information, healthy and affordable foods, and safe spaces to engage in physical activities.

Did you know that more than 1 in 5 Mexican American children and adolescents are obese? In an effort to combat the obesity epidemic among Latinos in the United States, LULAC launched the Latinos Living Healthy Initiative. The health of Latinos in the U.S. demands immediate and ongoing attention; through sound policy solutions, increased awareness and advocacy at the local, state and federal levels, LULAC seeks to empower Latino families with resources to change their lives now for a better tomorrow.

Through this initiative, LULAC continues to mobilize grassroots networks of Latino community advocates. As vocal and vibrant participants in the public health policy process, these health advocates will raise their local health and nutrition issues to state and federal platforms with the following priorities:

1. improving access to quality and affordable health care
2. improving access to nutritious and affordable foods as well as to safe spaces for physical activity
3. raising awareness of chronic diseases, risks and preventative measures and screenings

The Walmart Foundation

With support from a longtime LULAC partner, Wal-Mart, the Latinos Living Healthy initiative expanded significantly over the past year! Through this exciting collaboration, LULAC seeks to empower diverse communities across the nation with information about healthy food options in the United States and Puerto Rico. LULAC's overarching strategy addresses the alarming health disparities among Latinos through interactive and dynamic experiences, including one-on-one workshops, community health festivals, and a public education campaign. This Latinos Living Healthy initiative will include:

  • One workshop at the 2013 LULAC National Convention in Las Vegas that is free and open to the public
  • Two virtual education or training sessions that are free and open to the public
  • Two community education festivals in San Antonio, Texas, and the second in a western city to be announced soon.
  • A public education campaign utilizing print and new media to educate LULAC’s network of 135,000 volunteer members organized into 900 councils and 56 community technology centers

When it comes to foods purchased at grocery stores, cooked and prepared at home, or eaten outside the home, LULAC emphasizes the importance of associating the healthy choice with the easy choice. In addition to empowering consumers with information about healthy food options, this initiative encourages families to be active! The Latinos Living Healthy campaign motivates neighborhoods across the nation to exercise, encourages people to build nutritious eating habits into their daily routines, and strengthens the capacity of local leaders to bring key messages to their immediate communities.
