LULAC MOURNS THE PASSING OF THE REV. JESSE JACKSON, A GIANT OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
Nation's Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Honors a Lifelong Champion of Justice, Unity, and Equality for All
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) joins the nation in mourning the passing of the Reverend Jesse Jackson, who died today at the age of 84. A towering figure in the American civil rights movement and a loyal friend and ally of LULAC, Reverend Jackson devoted his life to advancing social change, expanding opportunity, and defending the fundamental promise of equality for all.
"Today, we have lost not only a historic civil rights leader, but a brother in the movement," said Roman Palomares, LULAC National President and Chairman of the Board. "Reverend Jesse Jackson walked with us and stood firm beside the Latino community when it mattered most. He believed that justice is indivisible, that when one community is denied dignity, we are all diminished. We mourn his passing deeply, and we recommit ourselves to the work he never abandoned."
Following in the moral footsteps of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Reverend Jackson raised his voice when others fell silent, challenged injustice wherever it stood, and called our nation to live up to its highest ideals. He stood shoulder to shoulder with Latino leaders and communities across the United States and Puerto Rico, understanding that the struggle for justice is shared, and that progress demands solidarity among all people of conscience.
"Reverend Jackson showed us that progress is built on partnership," said Juan Proaño, Chief Executive Officer of LULAC. "He taught by example that when communities of color stand together, when we link arms in common purpose, we become stronger, more effective, and more capable of shaping history. He understood that solidarity is power, and that unity across lines of race, culture, and geography is the pathway to a new morning for America.”
Though we grieve his passing, we honor him best by continuing the work, walking forward together, arms interlocked, committed to a nation that fulfills its promise for every American. Reverend Jesse Jackson's message endures. LULAC will remember him always with deep respect, abiding gratitude, and lasting admiration.
