MEMORANDUM TO: United States Marshals, Chief Deputy United States Marshals; Assistant Directors; Staff Offices; Administrative Officers
FROM: Darla K. Callaghan
Assistant Director
SUBJECT: Deputy Recruitment and Examination
The United States Marshals Service (USMS) recruitment drive, utilizing the new Deputy
U.S. Marshal (DUSM) Competitive Exam, will begin on March 5, 2012 with the opening of an
online vacancy announcement posted at www.usajobs.gov. The announcement will be open
until midnight on the day we receive 5,000 applications or for five days, whichever comes first.
This recruitment drive will be unique for the USMS, as we have engaged the Office of Personnel
Management (OPM) to post the vacancy announcement, manage the application process,
administer the exam, and develop a new structured interview. Also unique to this recruitment
effort, we will be hiring the new Deputy U.S. Marshals at the GL-082-07 level. This will ensure
we hire a high caliber of new deputies to build a strong operational workforce.
To take the exam, applicants will be required to have an account and a resume on
USAJOBS in order to apply to the online vacancy announcement. Those interested in taking the
exam will be encouraged to visit USAJOBS ahead of time to create an account and build their
resumes so they will be ready to apply when the announcement opens. Applicants determined to
meet the minimum eligibility requirements will be scheduled to take the new DUSM
Competitive Exam. The exam will be administered by OPM at fifteen predetemined testing.
locations nationwide. The final evaluation phase will be the interview process. These steps will
allow the USMS to create a register of well qualified candidates to fill DUSM classes beginning
in FY13.
