2022-2023 Latina LEADS Program Sites

San Benito County LULAC Council #2890 - Hollister, CA

San Benito County LULAC Council #2890 is supporting the community at Maze Middle School, a campus that serves economically disadvantaged students who often lack the support to take education seriously in the STEAM fields of study.

The Latina LEADS program is supporting its educational mission by providing the framework to engage students at a young age to discover the possibilities for higher education and careers within the fields of STEAM. Students will have access to mentors and one-on-one
tutoring as well as experience with STEAM-related hands-on projects with guidance from mentors in the profession.

LULAC Salinas Council #2055 - Salinas, CA

LULAC Salinas Council #2055 knows that STEAM is a critical part of a student’s education, and it is especially important to introduce STEAM education to low-income Hispanic students who tend to do poorly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math subjects as a result of systemic issues that have prevented them from engaging in deep learning of concepts rather than just meeting curriculum objectives.

The Latina LEADS program will provide the resources necessary to create a tailored STEAM experience for young Latinas in Salinas. By engaging them in the robust curriculum, they will deepen their interest, understanding, and achievement in STEAM. The program will also connect students with role models and ensure that the girls feel safe, prepared, and comfortable engaging with other women studying and working in STEAM.

Latinitas - Austin, TX

Latinitas is empowering all girls to innovate through media and technology by providing direct digital media and technology training and esteem-boosting services not only based in gender, but also culture. Exclusively in underfunded communities, Latinitas has partnered widely and strategically in schools, libraries, community centers and public housing sites providing free STEAM education to many facing challenges to education, economic and tech access.

Through the Latina LEADS program, Latinitas would serve Latina girls with a creative and comprehensive STEAM learning curriculum, cultural competency and with the support of Latino STEAM professionals who already volunteer at Latinitas from the nation’s largest technology, energy and financial institutions.

Fab Lab El Paso - El Paso, TX

Fab Lab El Paso is an important education innovation advocate in the El Paso region and plays a critical role in helping students access career pathways in the technology fields. Moving the needle on gender inclusion, equity, and parity has been critical to Fab Lab's mission and goal.

The Latina LEADS program will support its mission by providing diversity, equity, and inclusion in its STEAM programming. Through the program, they seek to connect a cohort of middle school-age young women with a wider range of STEAM-exploration opportunities, including attending a NASA launch through their Community Anchor Site designation by NASA, and more.

LULAC Herencia Council #4297 - Killeen, TX

The mission of LULAC Herencia Council #4297 is to inspire, nurture, and support the educational attainment of members of the Hispanic community and elevate those in need while fostering leadership to do the same for future generations.

The Latina LEADS program will support its mission by ensuring our future Latina generation is exposed to resources to help them move forward on their educational path. The program will make an impact on middle school Latinas by exposing them to the world of STEAM and piquing their interest in the fields of study and careers.

Mid Rio Grande Border Area Health Education Center - Laredo, TX

Mid Rio Grande Border Area Health Education Center’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of the Laredo community by increasing the number of well-trained healthcare workers in the region, enhancing academic resources for existing health care providers, and fostering a healthy lifestyle through community education programs. Their programs for students in K-12 grade are currently focused on encouraging higher education and introducing students to health careers.

The Latina LEADS program will enhance the existing array of programs currently offered for middle school students. A greater focus will be placed on middle school girls by giving them more individualized attention and guidance in STEAM careers. This program will directly impact participants, while indirectly benefiting the Webb County community. As these middle school girls pursue STEAM careers they will return to their community and enhance the infrastructure and job market, which will lead to future students’ exposure to STEAM careers in the community.
