Congressman Jeff Denham Keeps His Word with the Latino Community by Co-sponsoring HR 15

Washington, D.C. — Earlier this month, as part of LULAC’s ACTober advocacy visits, LULAC members representing California and other parts of the country met with Congressman Jeff Denham to press the importance of passing immigration reform this year.
Over this past weekend, on Al Punto with Jorge Ramos, Congressman Denham announced that he would support the immigration reform effort and as part of that commitment became the first Republican Member of Congress to co-sponsor HR 15, The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.
“Comprehensive immigration reform has passed the Senate and has the support of Democratic House members and multiple groups including business, faith based, and civil rights organizations,” said LULAC Executive Director Brent Wilkes. “We are encouraged by Congressman Denham’s decision to co-sponsor HR 15 and call upon other House Republicans to co-sponsor the bill and ultimately work towards moving the bill to the House Floor for a full vote.”
The Latino community is grateful to Congressman Denham for putting sound immigration policy over party politics. In his statement the Congressman outlined the reasons why he is the first Republican Member of Congress to co-sponsor HR 15 which includes an earned path to citizenship. While the bill has received public support from as many as 28 House Republicans the rest have not yet cosponsored HR 15, a bill which offers a common sense approach to fixing our country’s broken immigration system. LULAC will continue to reach out to these and other Members of Congress in an effort to get their support through co-sponsorship of the bill.
