LULAC Statement on Santa Fe High School Tragedy

Washington, D.C. - On Friday, ten people were killed in a shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas. The 17-year-old suspected gunman is in custody.

LULAC National President Roger C. Rocha, Jr. issued the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened by today’s tragedy in Texas. As students from across the country focus on graduation and prepare for the next chapter of their lives, we are reminded yet again of the hundreds of children who have been robbed of this opportunity due to gun violence. This catastrophe marks the 22nd school shooting in 2018 and the third in the last eight days alone. The inaction by Congress demonstrates our lawmakers lack the courage it takes to protect our young people. Our students deserve better. We need stronger gun control measures now. We urge communities to take back the control by exercising their voting power. Midterm primaries are our opportunity to create real change at the local level and help put an end to these preventable tragedies.”
