LULAC Welcomes Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson To The U.S. Supreme Court

Nation’s Largest and Oldest Latino Civil Rights Organization Celebrates the Historic Swearing In of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the First Black Female Justice of the Supreme Court

Washington, DC – The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today issued the following statement regarding Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson being sworn in as the newest member of the Supreme Court, becoming the first Black woman to serve on the nation's highest court. She replaces former Justice Stephen Breyer, who retired from the bench today.

Sindy Benavides, LULAC CEO:

“In one swearing in, a whole new world of possibilities was opened for African American women and girls. For the first time in our nation’s history, young Black girls can look up to the highest court in our nation and see themselves represented.

“The excitement today was palpable and the feeling brings me right back to 2009, when cheers erupted after Justice Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed as the first Latina to serve on the Supreme Court. I still remember the energy and how that feeling of pride gave me chills. I felt the same today. “Alongside many other allies, LULAC supported and fought for the confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson because she is exceptionally qualified, and as the first public defender nominated to the Supreme Court she has seen racial bias and austere sentences first-hand. She has a plethora of civil rights and criminal defense experience, which will bring much-needed balance to the court.

“Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s personal experiences and her professional expertise will bring a long overdue and invaluable voice to the bench, now more than ever. Today is a historic day America can be proud of.”
