LULAC Takes Action After Latest Political Statement By Goya Foods CEO

Nation’s Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Says It Is Taking Multi-Prong Approach to Hold Robert Unanue Accountable

Washington, DC - Domingo Garcia, National President of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the organization’s national board voted to issue the following statement Tuesday in the wake of remarks made by the CEO of GOYA FOODS at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this past weekend in Orlando, Florida.

“LULAC is not going to remain silent after the words of GOYA FOODS CEO, Robert Unanue asserting that Donald J. Trump is “the real, the legitimate and the still actual president” of the United States. Mr. Unanue who is recklessly making unfounded claims. These only fuel a former president who at the same event again attacked Latino refugees and asylum seekers from Central America. In so doing, the former president placed a bulls-eye squarely on their backs with his hate speech and xenophobic accusations. GOYA FOODS’ board of directors must know that when Mr. Unanue puts out lies to the community, there are consequences and there are going to be ramifications for their product.

Therefore, we are announcing a call-to-action involving every reasonable American who wants to make the GOYA FOODS CEO accountable for continuing to spew his divisive election conspiracy theories and by doing so, supporting the racially-based hatred that Donald Trump peddled for the last four years.

First, we are urging people to join LULAC in the #StopGoyaFoodsCEO campaign. This will send him and GOYA FOODS a clear message rejecting his persistent lies. His words are feeding into the mindset of domestic terrorists who can again trigger dangerous and violent actions against our democracy and millions of innocent Latinos.

Second, we will inform consumers of GOYA FOODS across the nation that it will be the action or inaction on the matter by the company’s board of directors in dealing with Mr. Unanue's comments that will determine what future action LULAC will take. We are allowing a reasonable timeframe for this to take place.

Finally, we extend to GOYA FOODS employees our support as we denounce the actions solely of their CEO and make it unequivocally clear that he has no place exploiting the very community that has loyally purchased the company’s products for decades. They are hostage to his arrogance now tainting the GOYA FOODS name in the process.”
