LULAC Statement on Passing of President Jimmy Carter

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. On behalf of LULAC, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Carter family and friends during this time of loss and mourning. On behalf of LULAC board of directors, leadership team and its members, I want to express gratitude for President Carter’s leadership in the protection of human rights in the U.S. and around the world.
President Carter’s long and impactful life of public service was dedicated to uplifting and empowering the most marginalized communities in our country. As President, he was a steadfast champion for the Latino community and civil rights, advancing political representation for Latinos in the federal government and expanding access to educational opportunities. Notably, his creation of the White House Office of Hispanic Affairs, the first office of its kind in the Executive Branch, exemplified his deep commitment to engaging with the Latino community and addressing our unique challenges.
Even after his Presidency, President Carter’s unwavering mission to support humanitarian initiatives and peacemaking efforts further demonstrated his lifelong dedication to public service. His work often extended to Latin America, where he led recovery efforts following natural disasters and supported the betterment of communities.
President Carter’s legacy is an enduring example of moral and ethical leadership. I encourage future leaders to emulate his values and find inspiration in his story on how to work in your own way to better the world for those most in need.”
