LULAC Applauds King v. Burwell Decision Protecting Healthcare Coverage for Millions of Americans

June 25, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, LULAC National Executive Director, Brent Wilkes, issued the following statement in response to the 6-3 Supreme Court decision in King v. Burwell, which upheld the subsidies of the Affordable Care Act.

“Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, more than six million low-income Americans in 34 states have relied on federal subsidies to purchase insurance plans in the federal marketplace. The Supreme Court decision today ensures that those Americans will continue to receive those subsidies and thus, will be able to afford health coverage.

The Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision cements the Affordable Care Act for generations to come, thus guaranteeing access to quality, affordable care to millions of Americans. Specific to the Latino community, the decision means that the 2.6 million Latinos who have gained coverage since 2013 will be able to keep their subsidies.

Moving forward we urge members of Congress and state and community leaders to cease their attacks on the Affordable Care Act. Furthermore, we urge all Americans to take advantage of the opportunity for quality affordable health care coverage and enroll for health insurance.”
