LULAC Statement on Hurricane Harvey in Texas

August 28, 2017

Laredo, Texas – Hurricane Harvey, a Category 4 storm, caused widespread damage throughout the Gulf Coast in Texas on Saturday. The hurricane is the state’s worst storm in 50 years and has killed at least two people. Authorities expect the death toll to rise as rescuers continue working to reach those who remain stranded. Forecasters warned that the major threat is the volume of water expected over the region throughout the next several days.

In response, LULAC National President Roger C. Rocha Jr. issued the following statement:

“Hurricane Harvey has brought devastating destruction to the Gulf Coast of Texas and it’s not over yet. It’s caused catastrophic and life-threatening flooding that is only expected to get worse as rain continues to fall over southeast Texas. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those impacted by the storm. We urge everyone to please adhere to warnings issued by state authorities, including staying at home, if possible, and off the street. We commend federal, state and local officials for mobilizing quickly to provide relief efforts. We also want to acknowledge and thank the Red Cross, H.E.B. Food stores, Wal-Mart and the hundreds of volunteers for all their efforts in assisting flood victims.”
