Description

The month of February is American Heart Month. This month brings awareness to the importance of a healthy heart and to encourage healthy habits that help reduce the risk of heart disease. According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States.

High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. Several other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at a higher risk for heart disease, including:

● Diabetes
● Overweight and obesity
● Unhealthy diet
● Physical inactivity
● Excessive alcohol use

Among Hispanic adults age 20 and older, 48.3% of men and 32.4% of women have Cardiovascular Disease. Non-Hispanic blacks and Mexican Americans adolescents have a greater prevalence of high blood pressure and pre-high blood pressure than non-Hispanic whites, and the prevalence was greater in boys than in girls.
