Resolution in Support of Representative Raul Grijalva for Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee

WHEREAS, 84 years ago, the founders of the League of Latin American Citizens, (LULAC) joined together to establish an organization that would become the largest, oldest and successful Hispanic civil rights and service organization in the United States, and

WHEREAS, over the past 40 years, Congressman Grijalva has been a staunch advocate for progressive environmental policies, event at the local level wherein Grijalva advocated for equitable land use issues as a Pima County Supervisor; , And

WHEREAS, Congressman Grijalva’s leadership led to the creation of the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan, an innovative approach to species and habitat protection in concert with the land-use planning in the community. , and

WHEREAS, Congressman Grijalva has represented the interests of Latinos and the country as a whole in his capacity as Ranking Member of House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Environmental Regulations- a Committee that oversees 600 million acres of public lands. , and

WHEREAS, Congressman Grijalva has plated the leading role in creating a permanent National Landscape Conservation System within the Department of the Interior and fought successfully to address the maintenance funding shortfall of American Public Lands , and

WHEREAS, Congressman Grijalva has made protecting wilderness area and endangered species, advancing the National Parks Service Centennial Initiative protecting the Grand Canyon from the threat of expanded uranium mining, advancing ecological restoration on federal lands, and addressing the need for a budget fix for wild land fire suppression funding his top priorities , and

WHEREAS, Latinos have a vested interest in the protection of public lands and a re disproportionately impacted by the pollutions of our national resources

WHEREAS, Latinos care deeply about conversation an environmental issues, with more than 9-in-10 (92%) Latino voters agreeing that we “have a moral responsibility to take care of God’s creations on the earth- the wilderness and forests, the oceans, lakes and rivers; and more than 9-in-10 (94%) of Latino voters say outdoor activates such as fishing, picnics, camping, and visiting national parks are important to them and their families.

WHEREAS, LULAC and Latino communities around the country believe strongly that the House Committee on Natural Resources will be strengthened by a strong, dedicated, and progressive Latino as a Ranking Member

BE IT RESOLVED, That the LULAC National Convention urges the entire congressional delegation to support Congressman Grijalva, and vote in favor of his candidacy for Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee.
