Washington, DC – LULAC firmly supports the U.S. Justice Department as it investigates alleged atrocities occurring along the border between the United States and Mexico, particularly between Eagle Pass and Brownsville, Texas. LULAC condemns the inhumane actions perpetrated under the banner of Operation Lone Star, as ordered by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, which have led to the tragic loss of life and immense suffering among asylum-seeking refugees. LULAC urges the U.S. Justice Department to conduct a thorough and transparent review of the crisis and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

"These are barbaric, criminal, and indefensible actions," says Domingo Garcia, LULAC National President. "Those responsible for these inhumane orders and anyone involved in carrying them out or not reporting them should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It is hypocritical to hide behind words of protecting Americans or Texans while endangering the lives of desperate and defenseless refugees," he adds.

Installing floating buoys and other barriers to prevent people from crossing into the United States has forced desperate refugees to navigate deeper and more treacherous sections of the Rio Grande River, resulting in multiple drownings, including those of innocent children.

The revelations from a Department of Public Safety trooper and paramedic's operational report, which included disturbing instructions to push children into the water and tell them to return to Mexico, further underscore the gravity of this humanitarian crisis. "LULAC holds Governor Abbott directly to blame, and he should face charges for violating international laws of atrocities committed against humanity," says Garcia. "Shame on him and every so-called Christian who professes faith while slaughtering the less fortunate. They, too, shall be judged."

LULAC calls upon all individuals of conscience, civil rights organizations, and lawmakers to unite in demanding accountability and immediate action to end these atrocities. LULAC will continue to advocate for the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their background or origin. We stand in solidarity with refugees and immigrants and will strive tirelessly to create a more compassionate and just society for all.
