LULAC RESPONDS TO SUPREME COURT RULING ALLOWING IMMIGRATION STOPS BASED ON APPEARANCE AND ACCENT
Nation's Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Prepares to Ramp Up Educational Know-Your-Rights Campaign Across US
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today expressed grave concern following a Supreme Court shadow docket decision that temporarily lifted an injunction prohibiting immigration agents from making indiscriminate stops in the Los Angeles area.
The unsigned order, issued without full briefing or oral arguments, permits government officers to resume practices that community leaders have described as blatant racial profiling — including questioning individuals based on language, type of work, or appearance. The case remains under appeal in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
"LULAC denounces this backroom decision that endangers millions of Latinos and other people of color across our country," said Roman Palomares, LULAC National President and Chairman of the Board. "We will not be intimidated by a politicized Supreme Court. Instead, we are doubling down coast to coast and shore to shore, equipping our communities with knowledge to navigate an increasingly hostile campaign. For months, since the Trump administration declared open season on undocumented immigrants, LULAC has been preparing, and now we are ramping up even more to ensure that our families are informed and empowered."
Juan Proaño, LULAC Chief Executive Officer, vowed that the organization will not retreat. "LULAC is not going to quit its mission to defend those who have no voice. We are being strategic, unified, and relentless in working with allies nationwide. This is not the time to despair but to collaborate and ensure that civil rights and due process remain at the center of America's promise."
LULAC reaffirmed its call for Congress to step in and restore balance by enacting legislation that prevents discriminatory practices under the guise of immigration enforcement.
