LULAC HONORS HISTORIC MOMENT AS FIRST AMERICAN BECOMES POPE LEO XIV
Nation's Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Celebrates a Milestone of Unity, Inclusion, and Hope for 1.4 Billion Catholic Faithful Around the World

Washington, DC – The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) joins millions across the globe in acknowledging the historic and spiritual significance of today's announcement from Vatican City that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago has been chosen by his peers to serve as the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. Now known as Pope Leo XIV, he becomes the first American ever elevated to this sacred role, leading 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.
Born and raised in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV brings a lifetime of service that extends far beyond the borders of the United States. He spent two decades in Peru as a missionary and bishop, rising to become a global voice in the Vatican on leadership and pastoral care. A member of the Order of St. Augustine, he has championed inclusion, care for the poor, and dignity for the displaced.
"Today is a day of profound significance, not only for the Catholic faithful but for all who believe in the power of unity and service," said Roman Palomares, LULAC National President and Chairman of the Board. "Pope Leo XIV's elevation is a historic moment for people of faith in the United States, especially those from diverse and often marginalized communities. His life reflects a commitment to crossing borders and embracing people of every race, gender identity, background, and socioeconomic status. LULAC celebrates this moment with deep respect and hope that the Church will continue to reflect the beauty of all humanity."
The selection of Pope Leo XIV comes at a time of global unrest and polarization, underscoring the deep desire for leadership rooted in compassion, justice, and peace.
"This extraordinary announcement is a message of hope in an age of anxiety and division," said Juan Proaño, LULAC Chief Executive Officer. "It is a call for all of us—within LULAC, across America, and worldwide—to unite with renewed purpose. Pope Leo XIV's journey from Chicago to Peru to the Vatican is a living testament that humble service and unwavering faith in humanity can bridge even the deepest divides. Let this new chapter remind us of our shared responsibilities to one another and future generations, all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."
LULAC remains committed to its service, advocacy, and human dignity mission. We stand in solidarity with faith communities and all those working for a more compassionate and inclusive world.
