LULAC ANALYSIS: POLITICIANS, UNIONS, AND COMMUNITY LEADERS MUST COME TOGETHER TO FIX PHOENIX PD
Nation's Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Calls for Changes in Local Policing Practices that Will Restore Trust and Cooperation
Washington, DC - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) fully supports the U.S. Department of Justice's decisive action against the Phoenix, Arizona Police Department. Also, LULAC affirms the DOJ's decision to file a lawsuit against the Phoenix P.D., citing a pattern and practice of conduct that violates the U.S. Constitution and federal law.
"LULAC agrees with the U.S. Department of Justice investigating violations of the Constitution's 1st, 4th, and 14th amendments," says Domingo Garcia, LULAC National President. "These civil rights ensure the freedom of speech, lawful assembly, and equal protection under the law for all, including Latinos, Blacks, and Native Americans. We stand with the good police officers keeping residents safe, but we cannot accept bad cops who act as judge, jury, and executioners. We urge city, union, and community leaders to work with DOJ for the good of all the people of Phoenix," he added.
"We thank the Department of Justice for answering our urgent pleas for help," says Maria Duran, LULAC Arizona State Director, adding, "LULAC Arizona State calls upon stakeholders to come to the table in the spirit of finding solutions. We must work together to make systemic changes that improve training and help officers in the field follow policy. Only by learning from the past can we develop a blueprint for a city where everyone feels safe when they see Phoenix P.D."
Garcia says restoring trust is paramount. "Many Latinos have lost confidence in law enforcement. Sadly, it only leads to more crime if residents do not come forward because they fear bad cops will target them. Changing this image will require cooperation between the city, community, and Phoenix P.D. I am hopeful, but it will take time and hard work," said Garcia.
LULAC Arizona State says it is committed to helping lead and participate in meaningful dialogue that fosters reforms within the Phoenix Police Department. Its priorities include public safety, access to quality health care, and public education.
