What are the Standards?/¿Que son los Estándares?
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort that established a single set of clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English language arts and mathematics that states voluntarily adopt. The standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to enter credit bearing entry courses in two or four year college programs or enter the workforce. The standards are clear and concise to ensure that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of the expectations in reading, writing, speaking and listening, language and mathematics in school.
La Iniciativa de los Estándares Estatales Comunes es una esfuerza dirigido por los estados que establece un conjunto único de estándares educacionales claros para kindergarten al duodécimo grado en Artes del Lenguaje y Matemáticas que adoptan voluntariamente los estados. Los estándares se diseñan para asegurar que los graduados de la escuela secundaria estén preparados para entrar la universidad o la fuerza laboral. Los estándares son claros y concisos para confirmar que los padres, profesores, y estudiantes puedan comprender las expectativas que los estándares establecen.

Where are they being implemented?/¿Dónde se implementan?
42 states, DC and four territories have already adopted the standards. Adopting the standards is entirely the states’ decision – the federal government does not force the standards upon the states, nor is it involved in implementation of the standards. States each have their own implementation plan in place for the standards, which span over a few years. Most states have either already fully implemented the standards, or will do so within the next couple school years.

Adoptar los estándares es totalmente la decisión de los estados. El gobierno federal no obliga a los estados a adoptarlos ni está involucrado en la implementación de los estándares. Cada estado tiene su propio plan de implementación para los estándares, que extienden por algunos años. La mayoría de los estados ya han implementado los estándares completamente, o van a hacerlo en uno o dos años.
Who developed the Standards?/¿Quién los desarrolló?
Development of the CCSS was led by the nation’s governors and education commissioners, through their representative organizations the National Governors Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO)
Teachers, parents, school administrators, education experts, and state leaders also provided input into the development of the standards.
El desarrollo de los estándares fue dirigido por los gobernadores y comisionados de educación, por medio de sus respectivas organizaciones: la Asociación Nacional de Gobernadores y el Consejo de Oficiales Principios de Escuelas Estatales. Profesores, padres, administradores escolares, expertos de educación y líderes estatales también contribuyeron con sus consejos al desarrollo de los estándares.
Why are they important?/¿Por qué son importantes?
- Currently, every state has its own set of academic standards, meaning public education students in each state are learning to different levels.
Actualmente, cada estado tiene su propio conjunto de estándares académicos. Debido a eso, los estudiantes de la escuela pública en diferentes estados están aprendiendo a diferentes niveles.
- All students must be prepared to compete with not only their American peers in the next state, but with students from around the world.
Todos los estudiantes necesitan prepararse para competir, tanto con sus compañeros, como con estudiantes internacionales.
- They promote equity by ensuring that all students, no matter where they live or what their backgrounds may be, are well prepared with the skills and knowledge needed to prepare them for college or career.
Ayudaran a que las escuelas se responsabilicen del rendimiento de los grupos de estudiantes que tradicionalmente son desatendidos; como por ejemplo estudiantes de color, con discapacidades o aprendices de inglés (ELLs).
