Sophie Smith serves as a Policy and Research Fellow at LULAC’s National Office in Washington, D.C. She is from New York, New York, and attends Brigham Young University with a major in Sociology and minors in Spanish and Global Women’s Studies. Within her campus, she is President of the Sociology Academic Student Association and a member of the Global Women’s Studies Honors Society. She has had the opportunity to do work with her professors both as a teacher's assistant as well as a research assistant. Currently, she is working on research surrounding the immigration of unaccompanied minors from Central and South America. She will be attending the ASA conference this year to present a paper about the differential treatment of Mexican Unaccompanied Minors alongside her professors. In her previous internship at the “Welcome Baby” program at United Way, she was able to offer various resources, such as early childhood parenting classes-to members of the Latino Community in Utah County. After finishing her undergraduate degree, she plans on attending graduate school in Sociology starting Fall 2026. Her ultimate goal is to become a professor of Sociology who specializes in Immigration and Education. She is passionate about educational equity, immigration reform and women’s rights. When she is not working or studying, she loves being outside, listening to music, and spending time with her family.
