San Antonio, TX – Today, LULAC National Educational Service Centers, Inc. (LNESC) and Marathon Oil Corporation will launch their Science Corps Program in San Antonio, Texas. The program will provide students attending Terrell Wells Middle School with hands on instruction in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The Science Corps program will help students in economically challenged areas prepare for careers in the fields of STEM.

“LNESC is focused on providing the Latino community with STEM-based programs at an early age in order to encourage more students to pursue careers in engineering, biochemistry, hydrology and medicine,” said Richard Roybal, LNESC Executive Director.

“This partnership further boosts our district’s ambition of providing children with college and career readiness. Our middle school students will have exposure to subjects related to physics, environmental science and energy and many of the subjects will be taught by experts who have achieved success in their fields,” stated Superintendent, Mr. Rey Madrigal.

LNESC and Marathon Oil Corporation are committed to helping students cultivate an interest in STEM fields through a 30 week after school program curriculum. The program includes interactive learning sessions, exposure to STEM professionals, and experience working in a science lab. Students will also participate on projects related to physics, nanotechnology, engineering, environmental science, energy, and sustainability which is part of their weekly instruction.

“We are very excited about this partnership with LNESC and the opportunity to help increase the number of students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” said Tim Fischer, Marathon Oil Corporation Manager of Corporate Development and Diversity.

“Advancements in these fields are essential to companies like ours as we work to meet the world’s growing energy needs.”
