League of United Latin American Citizens & State Democracy Defenders Action Release New Report Exposing Effort to Undermine Confidence in Tuesday’s Election

The Big Lie of 2024 aka La Gran Mentira: Exposing Anti-Immigrant Election Lies

Washington, D.C. — Today, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and State Democracy Defenders Action (SDDA) released The Big Lie of 2024 aka La Gran Mentira: Exposing Anti-Immigrant Election Lies, a comprehensive analysis of Donald Trump and his allies efforts to push a disinformation campaign based on lies about immigrants and voting. The goal of the Big Lie of 2024 is to expose the falsehoods that undermine public trust in the integrity of the upcoming election and lay the groundwork to, once again, claim victory regardless of the final vote tally.

The new report details the legal framework that unequivocally prohibits ineligible people from voting including how state and federal election security provisions create a multi-layered series of checks that further strengthen those federal protections. It also delves into the data which demonstrates through investigations and audits by state agencies, independent researchers, and media organizations that there is a miniscule number of ineligible immigrants registering to vote, with an even smaller amount who actually vote.

“It has been definitively proven that these are false narratives and it is obvious they are being spread in order to suppress the vote of Black and Brown communities and sow doubt in the election outcome,” said Juan Proaño, LULAC Chief Executive Officer. “By exposing these lies our aim is to ensure Latino and all voters feel confident that they can vote freely and that their vote will be counted accurately.”

The report traces Trump’s history of false claims about immigrants and how Republican leaders have followed suit with proposed legislative non-solutions intended to silence voters and how they may disparate impact minority voting groups. It also provides a range of solutions, including legislation, media and public information, voter outreach, legal avenues and other approaches. In proposing actionable solutions to combat disinformation about ineligible voters, the report seeks to provide templates to push back against this false and dangerous narrative and in so doing, aim to help safeguard confidence in this election cycle and in those to come.

“Four years ago, the first Big Lie shook the foundation of our democracy when thousands, egged on by lies, stormed the United States Capitol trying to prevent the peaceful transfer of power followed by a safe and secure election,” said Ambassador Norman Eisen (ret.), co-founder of State Democracy Defenders Action. “We have the power to stop this year’s attempt to silence the voice and votes of the U.S. electorate–and particularly of voters of color. We must act to do so.”
