LULAC Women’s Commission Pays Tribute To Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Segment of Nation’s Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Devoted to Women’s Rights Salutes RBG

Washington, DC - Elsie Valdes-Ramos - LULAC National Board Member and Vice-President, Women’s Commission of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today issued the following statement in tribute to Justice Ginsburg following her passing Friday at the age of 87.

“Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a pioneer in every sense of the word and a woman of courage who loved justice and devoted her entire life to its cause. For example, as recently as last year, it was Justice Ginsburg who expressed words that upheld Congress’ oversight of the affairs of Puerto Rico. Her singular voice helped to fend off Wall Street hedge funds trying to coerce billions of dollars in debt payments even as we faced the effects of tremendous natural disasters. The people of Puerto Rico may never fully appreciate just how critical her words were at that precise moment in our modern history.

In the same way, she upheld the rights of women describing them as essential to the very core of the human rights agenda and spoke of these as being part of equality in dignity and the very freedom that all people should be able to enjoy. For Justice Ginsburg, there were no barriers, no pre-conditions or limitations to some over others when it came to their civil rights. Indeed, her actions consistently affirmed the hallmark of her entire career. She never let her diminutive stature in any way diminish the power of her voice on the highest court of the land.

On behalf of the entire membership of the LULAC Women’s Commission, we are inspired by her life, indebted for her perseverance and energized to continue her work for social justice.”
