LULAC Stands With Dreamers And Immigrant Communities Ahead Of DACA Supreme Court Hearing

Nation’s Oldest & Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Demands that Congress Pass Permanent Protections for DACA Recipients

Washington, DC - Ahead of oral arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) case, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) national leadership released the following statements reinforcing support for DACA recipients, their families, and immigrant communities.

LULAC, which counts in its ranks hundreds of DACA recipients and immigrant mixed-status families, has provided legal assistance to complete DACA applications across the country. LULAC has also subsidized the costs associated with DACA application and empowered Dreamers through the LULAC Dreamers Summit which took place in April 2019. LULAC is committed to working with immigrant rights allies on behalf of the thousands of Latino families across the country who are impacted by DACA in demanding that Congress pass permanent protections for DACA recipients.

“Children and students should never be used as political piñatas by politicians,” stated LULAC President Domingo Garcia. “We urge the U.S Supreme Court to support our dreamers, but the U.S. Senate needs to take up an immigration bill to allow the legalization of dreamers and their parents before the end of the year. It is what America is about, it is what the Statue of Liberty and the American dream stand for.”

“The Supreme Court hearing is an opportunity for Justices to hear why DACA has unshakeable, legal grounds for existence,” said LULAC CEO Sindy Benavides. “LULAC will continue to stand strongly behind DACA recipients and our immigrant communities, who are part of the fabric of our country, contribute tremendously to our nation and our economy. Dreamers are small-business owners, local leaders, teachers, nurses, first responders and taxpayers. While LULAC urges the Supreme Court to follow the legal precedent for the DACA program, we demand that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stop being an obstructionist to this process.”
