LULAC Deplores Trump Administration's Current Immigration Policies

Oldest and largest U.S. Hispanic advocacy organization hosts Immigration Town Hall at 90th Annual Convention in Milwaukee to discuss pending raids and crisis at detention centers.

MILWAUKEE (July 12, 2019) – Today, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) hosted an Immigration Town Hall with Krish O’Mara Vignarajah, President and CEO of the Lutheran Immigation and Refugee Service; Bamby Salcedo, a transgender activist; and Mayra Joachin, Staff Attorney at the National Immigration Law Center, on the heels of news reports that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to begin raids across the country this weekend to arrest thousands of migrant families.

“LULAC is fighting to end the Trump Administration’s anti-children and anti-family campaign against our community,” said Domingo Garcia, LULAC National President. “The conditions in the immigration detention centers are deplorable and have been likened to concentration camps. LULAC will not standby while our babies are dying and in cages.”

The LULAC’s 90th Annual Convention comes on the heels of reports that ICE will conduct raids over the weekend in major cities across the US, further exacerbating the amount of immigrants in deplorable conditions in detention.

“Many of our LULAC members were unable to attend this year’s 90th anniversary conference because they are on the ground in communities across the country ready to protect and assist our brothers and sisters in harm's way,” said Sindy Benavides, CEO of LULAC. “We are not here just talking about immigration. We are on the ground working and making sure our community members know their rights and have the help in places they might need it.”
