LULAC Calls For Coronado School Officials To Take Action Tonight

Nation’s Largest and Oldest Civil Rights Organization Says Superintendent and School Board Must Make This a Teachable Moment

Washington, DC – Domingo Garcia, National President of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today issued the following statement following reports of a tortilla throwing incident that took place Saturday night at a high-school basketball game in Coronado, California. At the end of the game in which Coronado defeated Orange Glen 60-57, players, coaches and staff from Orange Glen were subjected to a rain of tortillas allegedly flung at them by the Coronado side.

“Today, I am making it very clear that LULAC is demanding that the Superintendent and Board of Trustees of the Coronado Unified School District take all appropriate and immediate disciplinary action against the coach, staff and students involved in the disgraceful and unsportsmanlike behavior of last Saturday night. Send a message to every school district in America that hatred, division, ridicule and student bullying will not be tolerated. Also, that acts of this type will be swiftly and strongly dealt with when they raise their ugly head on our public school campuses. LULAC hopes that the students of Coronado High School and the staff make this a teachable moment on how to unite, instead of be divided against other students or communities because of their school, race or ethnicity. May you truly be the champions reflected on Saturday night’s scoreboard, not the violent mob spewing racial hate seen in video images that have gone viral worldwide.”
