LULAC Marks Hispanic Heritage Month with Hundreds of LULAC Members Meeting on Capitol Hill for Annual Advocacy Day

September 30, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C.– On October 1st, the nation’s oldest and largest Latino organization will participate in LULAC’s ACTober: Fall Advocacy Day. The organization will conduct advocacy visits with over 60 Congressional offices from both the U.S Senate and the U.S House of Representatives. LULAC members will meet with Members of Congress from the Judiciary Committee, Education and the Workforce Committee, Natural Resources Committee, Energy and Commerce Committee, and Members from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

LULAC ACTober Fall Advocacy Day will include the bipartisan participation of Congressman Steny H. Hoyer, House Democratic Whip, Congressman Raul Grijalva, Congressman Joaquin Castro, U.S. Senator John Cornyn, and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.

The congressional visits reflect LULAC’s commitment to advocate for Hispanic communities across the country. Among the issues LULAC members will discuss include a need to strengthen accountability in the authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Act, and the need to increase the number of insurance enrollees under the Affordable Care Act. In addition, LULAC members will advocate for the elimination of the 34,000 detention bed quota and will urge Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. LULAC will also call for the repeal of unfair federal regulations that decrease retirement benefits for public sector workers. Finally, LULAC will urge Congress to pass strong LGBT anti-discrimination laws as well as pass legislation which would make Puerto Rico the 51st state.

LULAC ACTober Fall Advocacy Day will also include the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which will permit LULAC councils to become environmental stewards through family fishing activities and monarch butterfly conservation efforts.

Lastly, LULAC will observe the 50th anniversary of the establishment of LULAC Council #11041. Almost fifty years ago, LULAC, through the establishment of council #11041, became the first national Latino organization to have a presence in Washington, D.C.

ACTober: Fall Advocacy Day is part of LULAC’s effort to communicate the needs of the Hispanic community to elected officials. LULAC also urges its membership to create change in their local communities by meeting with their local and state legislators to support legislation that will directly benefit the Latino community.
