LULAC Warns Texas Governor Will Face Battles Ahead In Voter Fight

Nation’s Largest and Oldest Latino Civil Rights Organization Fires Back at Threats that Opposition Lawmakers Will Be Arrested

Washington, DC - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) issued the following statement after Texas Governor Greg Abbott warned late Monday in a televised interview that Democratic legislators who left the state “will be arrested” when they return.

Sixty-seven lawmakers broke quorum during the Texas special session called by Governor Abbott. They oppose plans by the Republican majority to force through laws which will disproportionately impact Blacks and Latinos. The Democrats did not attend Monday’s session and instead, traveled to the nation’s capital in their battle to protect voters’ rights.

State Representative Trey Martinez Fischer organized the trip, and said the Democrats left Texas to take their message to Washington, DC. “We have to decide if we are going to stand for democracy,” said Martinez Fischer. “We want the nation to join us and we want the U.S. Senate to hear us and act,” he added.

“The right to vote in Texas and America is sacred, and has been earned and paid for with blood, sweat, jail time, and enduring political repression since 1836 in Texas,” says Domingo Garcia, LULAC National President. “We will never go back to the days of Jim Crow, nor will we ever again accept second or third-class citizenship. Governor Abbott wants to take away the vote from millions of Texans because of their ethnic or racial background. To do so, he will first face battles on all levels. There will be no surrender of Texans’ voting rights. Governor Abbott, LULAC stands with all who say, no rigged elections will be legalized,” added Garcia.
