Justice for Natalia

Natalie Miranda

Natalie Miranda, 14 Years Old

LULAC is leading a coalition of local and national community members and advocates demanding justice for 14-year-old Natalia Miranda. Natalia was the victim of a hit-and-run motivated by hate and racism while walking to school. The perpetrator of this crime, Nicole Marie Poole Franklin, confessed to running over the teenager intentionally because she was “a Mexican.”

“This is the latest victim in what has already been one of the bloodiest years for Latinos in the United States and no one is more to blame for this dangerous toxic environment in our country today than President Trump himself,” says Domingo Garcia, National President.

Sign the Petition TODAY and tell Mr. Mark Krickbaum, United States Attorney Southern District, that Iowa is a state that values the human dignity and rights of each of its residents, and that such acts will never be tolerated.

The Petition

LULAC is calling for law enforcement officials to charge Nicole Franklin with a federal hate crime in addition to the attempted-murder charge. LULAC is demanding “Justice for Natalia” and asking that Franklin be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Nationally, Latinos have experienced an increase in hate-motivated violent incidents, but prosecutions of hate crimes are rare in Iowa, FBI crime statistics show.

A California State University study released this fall by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism shows person-directed hate crimes rose to a 16-year high of 4,571 last year, accounting for 61% of all 2018 hate crimes.

For Latinos, those crimes have risen 13% over one year and 48% over five years, according to the analysis of FBI crime stats.
