Florida Unemployment Now!

Dear Friends,

Dark clouds hang over 5 Million Latinos in the Sunshine State of Florida. Nearly 400,000 workers in the state have filed unemployment claims in just the last 2 ½ weeks. So many more are trying to do so that the State of Florida unemployment website crashed.

Even worse, Florida only has $77.9 million to provide unemployment benefits to everyone who has been laid off as a result of this economic crisis. Among those worst affected are Latinos in service jobs who have been laid-off or fired because of COVID-19.

Now, they’re being told the maximum a person can get is $275-a-week thanks to Sen. Rick Scott. No one can pay their bills and live on that!

Send a message to Sen. Rick Scott today and Gov. Ron DeSantis by signing the LULAC Unemployment Now petition.

Republican Party of Florida chairman Joe Gruters was more succinct: “$77 million? Someone should go to jail over that.” We could not agree more Joe!

Florida has the 3rd highest Latino population in the USA and deserves more from the $2-Trillion Stimulus Package. With hundreds of thousands of Floridians out of work, the state’s overwhelmed system is making it nearly impossible for many people to even get in line for benefits.

What happens when the unemployment program crashes and burns? The state safety net will crash and that's where it gets worse. Florida’s state revenue models are built around tourism and the sales tax. When people go from living check to check and cannot access benefits, consumer spending in the state collapses and takes state revenues with it. The state will then cut contracting and construction, deepening the employment crisis further.
