Sofia Cano Westmoreland

Sofia Westmoreland is a Research and Policy Fellow at LULAC's National Office in Washington, D.C., during the summer of 2026. Having grown up in Van Alstyne, Texas, she is a rising senior at the University of Texas at Austin, where she is majoring in Political Communication and Plan II Honors with a minor in Government.

Sofia has built a strong record of public service, civic engagement, and policy advocacy. She previously worked as a Policy Analyst in the Texas Senate, gaining firsthand experience with legislative research and policymaking at the Texas Capitol. She also served as a field organizer for a successful Texas House campaign, developing a grassroots understanding of voter outreach and community organizing.

Her commitment to civic participation extends beyond electoral politics. As a mentorship intern with GirlForward, she supported literacy initiatives and mentored young women refugees. Through the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life, she advanced civic education and voter engagement efforts on the UT campus. As Vice President of TX Votes, she helped lead campus-wide voter registration efforts that resulted in more than 3,000 students registering to vote.

Sofia has also been a leading advocate for students with disabilities through her work with the National Center for Learning Disabilities. Her advocacy has taken her to Capitol Hill and contributed to the publication of a policy memorandum developed in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education. In 2025, she also served as emcee for the organization's annual benefit gala in New York City.

Following graduation, Sofia plans to pursue a career in public service and public policy, working to strengthen civic participation and expand opportunities for underserved communities.
