Las Vegas, NV - Today, at the 84th Annual LULAC Convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada the organization passed a gun control resolution that supports expanding universal background checks in order to reduce gun violence related deaths. This marks the first organization of its kind to declare widespread and solid support of gun controls.

LULAC also passed a resolution today urging support for Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) in his bid for Ranking Member of the Natural Resources Committee. The resolution speaks to Congressman Grijalva’s tremendous track record and exemplary performance on behalf of our nation with respect to environmental and natural resource issues.

Additionally, Margaret Moran was reelected as the third woman to serve as president. The election only required a hand held vote because she had garnered a clear majority of the delegates who were present.

President Moran was first elected as LULAC’s National President in 2010 and was successfully re-elected for her fourth term as National President at the conclusion of this year’s convention. Moran has received numerous honors and awards for her continued service to LULAC and her community, including: the LULAC National Presidential Commendation, LULAC National Women’s Hall of Fame Inductee, Texas State Director’s Community Service Award, Hispanic Heritage Month Award – UT Health Science Center, IMAGE of San Antonio’s, Governor’s Yellow Rose of Texas Award and District XV Woman of the Year.

Moran’s involvement with LULAC spans more than three decades. She has served in many roles, including LULAC National Parliamentarian, National Vice President for Women, Texas State Director, Texas Deputy State Director, San Antonio District XV Director, District XV Treasurer and President of Council #4421. Additionally, Moran serves on the Board of the LULAC National Educational Service Centers (LNESC) and is passionate about her work in education. She was a co-founder of the LNESC-San Antonio Center and has been involved with the LNESC Young Readers Program.

“As I go into my fourth term as President of the nation’s oldest and largest Hispanic organization, I am resolute in my commitment that together we will secure real benefits for our community – most importantly we will ensure that comprehensive immigration reform passes this year,” stated Moran. “I am grateful for the support of all our members and look forward to working together in the coming year,” concluded Moran.
