LULAC Voices Support For Texas Sheriff As New ICE Director

Nation’s Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Leads With Call to Ban Child Detention Centers on U.S. Soil

Washington, DC - Domingo Garcia, the elected leader of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today came out with a strong message of support for Harris County, Texas Sheriff Ed Gonzalez who has been picked by President Biden to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement as the nation’s chief border law enforcement official.

“I want to congratulate Sheriff Ed Gonzalez on his nomination to head up ICE. For too long, ICE has malfunctioned in serving the needs of our country on border security and in providing humane and just treatment of the refugees coming into the United States. Hopefully, President Biden’s nomination of Sheriff Gonzalez will provide much needed new leadership and reform within our nation’s top border enforcement agency. Also, we will see a more fair but firm system of justice for the issues that are facing the United States on our southern and northern borders.

Further, I think it is very important that Sheriff Gonzalez, upon confirmation as Director of ICE, makes sure that we can adequately handle the number of unaccompanied children who are coming into the United States. Also, he must ensure that if we cannot do so, that these minors be placed in a safe environment while seeking reunification with their families. They must not be returned to Mexico into dangerous conditions and exposed to human traffickers and drug cartels.

It is the job of ICE to make sure that unaccompanied children who are the most vulnerable of all refugees are immediately or as soon as possible brought together with family and friends in the United States pending their court hearings. There should not be any baby jails or any children incarcerated in the United States of America. We are better than that.”
