Advocates and Private Sector Call for Strong Legislation to Protect the Quality of Life of Latino Seniors

Oldest and largest U.S. Hispanic advocacy organization hosts convening to discuss concrete steps to support of the elderly during 90th Annual Convention

MILWAUKEE (July 11, 2019) – Today, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) was joined by advocates and members of the private sector in calling for bold steps to ensure homecare, employment opportunities and medical care for Latino seniors. As a powerful voice in the space, LULAC is proud to stand together as a community demanding equal treatment for all.

“Latinos of all ages face many disparities including high rates of chronic and preventable illnesses, hunger, poverty and low rates of health insurance coverage,” said LULAC CEO Sindy Benavides. “As an organization, we are committed to fighting for programs that protect the elderly from abuse and fraud, and reduce the costly price of prescription medication.”

LULAC and its partner organizations have a long-standing history of working together for the health and well being of Latino families. Specifically, the organization strongly advocates for programs and legislation that protect the quality of life of Latino seniors, fair cost housing, transportation for those with special needs, homecare, employment opportunities, medical care and treatment services and health coverage.

Today’s panel was joined by AARP National Volunteer President Catherine Alicia Georges and National Council on Aging Executive Vice President & Chief Growth Officer Anna Maria Chávez.

This is one of the many activities hosted by LULAC during its 90th Annual Convention around health. In addition to this panel, LULAC will be hosting a fair focused on health and HIV testing throughout the convention and a Health Policy Spotlight on Wednesday, July 10 at 3:30pm CT focused on the poor communication Latinos often experience with their health care providers. An agenda and list of speakers is available here.
