Rockwall LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) will host National LULAC President, Domingo Garcia, at its August meeting. Garcia, a Dallas lawyer, was elected as National LULAC’s president at the organization’s convention last month in Phoenix.

Garcia is a former Dallas city council member and was the first Latino elected as the city’s mayor pro tem. Known for his strong pro-immigrant policies, Garcia was a member of the Texas House of Representatives when he co-authored a 2001 measure, signed into law by then-Governor Rick Perry, that granted undocumented immigrants in Texas the right to pay in-state tuition at public state universities so long as they graduated from a Texas high school. One of Garcia’s priorities for National LULAC is to provide support for local LULAC councils to increase Latino voter turnout, especially as the mid-term elections near. When discussing his election as LULAC National president, Garcia told the Dallas Morning News that Latinos “wanted a national voice that would speak for them in a strong and united manner.” Added Garcia, “we’re at a crucial point in history when Latinos are under attack.”
