Janai Nelson
President and Director-Counsel, NAACP Legal Defense Fund
Janai Nelson is the President and Director-Counsel of the Legal Defense Fund (LDF), where she serves as the primary institutional thought-leader and directs programmatic strategy to fight for racial justice and equality. A renowned scholar and veteran litigator, she has played a pivotal role in numerous landmark cases, including arguing Louisiana v. Callais before the U.S. Supreme Court in 2025 to defend the Voting Rights Act. Before leading the LDF, Nelson was a full professor and Associate Dean at St. John’s University School of Law and served as a Fulbright Scholar in Ghana. She is a graduate of NYU and UCLA School of Law and has been recognized with honors such as the NYU Distinguished Alumni Award and an honorary Doctor of Laws from Suffolk University.
