In Support of English Language Education that uses the First Language

WHEREAS, the League of United Latin American Citizens is this nation’s oldest and largest Latino organization, founded in Corpus Christi, Texas on February 17, 1929; and

WHEREAS, LULAC throughout its history has committed itself to the principles that Latinos have equal access to opportunities in employment, education, housing and healthcare; and

WHEREAS, LULAC Wisconsin supports the use of the student's first language as a valuable resource in the acquisition of a second language; and

WHEREAS, LULAC Wisconsin advocates a deep respect for the student's first language and culture by instructional and administrative educational personnel; and

WHEREAS, LULAC Wisconsin recognizes the vast amount of educational research that supports respect and use of prior learning to advance second language learning in our schools; and

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, LULAC Wisconsin supports the added value dual language instruction brings to our students, LULAC Wisconsin views proficiency in two languages as an asset in an ever expanding world economy.
